NESTROYANA

Blätter der Internationalen Nestroy-Gesellschaft

W. E. Yates writes:

The journal Nestroyana, which appears twice a year (spring and autumn), publishes articles and book reviews in German not only on the life and work of Nestroy and on his sources, critical reception and important influence on later writers but also on the history of the Viennese commercial theatres, their cultural context – including international links and comparisons – and the wider satirical tradition to the present day. Since 2000 the journal has been jointly edited by Ulrike Tanzer (Salzburg) and W. Edgar Yates (Exeter).

All articles received are subject to critical review by expert advisers before they can be accepted for publication; contributors are not limited to members of the Internationale Nestroy-Gesellschaft.

In preparing articles for submission authors are requested to follow carefully the editorial conventions, the current version of which can be accessed online at:

Also available online is an index to vols 1–20 (1979–2000):

For a taste of the standard and range of the content over  the years, it may be helpful for potential contributors to consult a celebratory collection of essays published to mark 25 years of Nestroyana. These essays are revised and updated versions of articles of lasting interest from the first 25 years of the journal on aspects of the relation between the nineteenth-century commercial theatres and their social environment. The volume appeared in 2006 in the series “Quodlibet“ under the title Theater und Gesellschaft im Wien des 19. Jahrhunderts (216 pp., hard cover, ISBN: 1927–3921, price 14.40 €), see:
