CONFERENCE: Wednesday, 2nd April to Friday,4th April 2008 to be held at St.Hilda's College Oxford
Posted: February 2008
This conference will examine the historical period which presaged and prepared for the artistic, cultural and political flowering which was to mark Austria and above all its capital Vienna at the ‘Jahrhundertwende’. In almost every field of activity – literature, music, art, architecture, journalism and politics – signs of emerging ‘modernity’ can be discerned in the years 1867-1890, although they have never attracted as much attention as the fin de siècle which followed.(Source: Conference flyer)

IBC seminar series on The Balkans in
20th-Century Austrian Literature
Posted: November 2007
28th February: Discussion of Milo Dor's 'Tote auf Urlaub'/ 'Dead Men on Leave'. Discussant: Heide Kunzelmann (QMUL)
Seminar description: Austria's relationship with the Balkans is shaped by the history of the Austro-Hungarian Empire; the Balkans are alone in identifying so closely with the collapse of the 'Donaumonarchie' in the early twentieth century. A shared past, and the various conflicts that took place at the time, gave rise to a substantial body of Austrian literature focusing on the region. The seminar series will look at this discourse, so deeply ingrained in the Austrian psyche, outlining some of its major themes, and will examine specific works such as Die Standarte, Alexander Lernet-Holenia's nostalgic review of the Empire's collapse, and Tote auf Urlaub, Milo Dor's novel set during the Nazi occupation of the Balkans, as well as looking at literary treatments of more recent regional conflicts by Peter Handke and Norbert Gstrein.
